Another one of my earlier pieces (emphasis on the word "earlier" -- about my third ring and second piece in silver ever -- so I know the soldering and finishing leaves much to be desired). It's a ring in the shape of a Torii gate. Not much else to say about this one.
Sterling silver -- about 16 Gauge. Liver of Sulfur and a brass brush finish.
Nice design and those rough cut edges seem to suit the overall look of the piece, a bit more work on the solder joints, but you know all that and these dA super-size pictures cause us all lots of angst. I have found many a thing that I could have sworn wasn't there before the photo shoot. Lol.
I'm glad you like it despite its numerous imperfections. This one is a few years old, so the solder seam is not as good as some of my more recent pieces. Also, the liver of sulphur accentuated it a bit. I was think of actually going back and refinishing some parts (i.e. smoothing out the lines and possibly fixing the solder joint) but that's a project for another day.
The only advice I can give is to heat the entire piece slowly and evenly before you start to focus on the seam. Don't use too much solder -- a little goes a long way with this stuff. Try to use as little as possible to get the job done. Always keep in mind that the solder will go towards the heat so if you heat one side more than the other, it will go to that side. This property can be a pain, but you can also use it to control the solder to some extent. And don't forget to flux the entire seam.
Practice does indeed make (sort of) perfect. Some of my later pieces are soldered much better than this one.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
